エリザベス・ノーバーグ・シュルツ先生は、クラウディオ・アバド、リッカルド・ムーティ・ルチアーノ・パヴァロッティ達と常に共演していた経歴を誇る、国際的な名ソプラノ歌手です。
一般社団法人Le Museさまが提供しているオンラインレッスンに、先日私も参加させていただきました。
オンラインを通してでもわかるエリザベス先生の素晴らしい発声法と音楽的なテクニックを短時間でたくさんご指導いただきました。
世界が身近に感じられ、このようなレッスンが受けられるような時代が到来したことには感謝しかありません。
来月の主催コンサート(2023/8/27/13:00〜)で演奏予定の曲目も聴いていただきました。
この本場イタリアのハイレベルなレッスンの成果が出るよう、本番まで前向きに研鑽したいと思います。
また、今回のオンラインレッスンの会場は、一流のグランドピアノが多数置かれていることで有名な江東区のスタジオ、シンフォニーサロンでした。
音響が抜群に素晴らしく、至るところに工夫が散りばめられている素敵なサロンです。
ご夫妻でスタジオを経営されていますが、奥様はピアニストとしても声楽家としても才能に溢れた素晴らしい方です。
更に、ピアノがプロ並みの腕前で経済学者としても有名な小田切尚登様の、エリザベス先生(来日時)との対談記事に感銘を受けましたのでこちらに掲載します。

昨晩は来日中のエリザベス・ノーバーグ・シュルツさんと食事をしながら色々とお話をしました。長年に渡りオペラの世界でスターとして活躍したソプラノ歌手です。カルロス・クライバーとスカラ座が来日したときに、彼女がラ・ボエームのムゼッタを演じたのを聴いた方もおられるでしょう。
その歌唱の素晴らしさについては、例えばこのパヴァロッティとの「愛の妙薬」のデュエットを聴いていただければと思いますが、今日は彼女との話の内容をお伝えしたく思います。
エリザベスさんの父親はノルウェー人で世界的な建築家・建築史家であるクリスチャン・ノーバーグ・シュルツで、母親アンナ・マリアさんはイタリア出身の英文学者・翻訳家です。二人はハーバードの博士課程で一緒になり、それで結婚したそうです。
エリザベスさんはノルウェーのオスロで生まれ育ったあと、イタリアのローマで音楽を学びました。つまりヨーロッパの北と南の文化を存分に吸収したということだと思われます。言葉は母国語であるノルウェー語とイタリア語以外に、英語、ドイツ語、フランス語を自在に使いこなします。
彼女の話はとにかく多方面にわたっていて、大変興味深かったです。例えばカルロス・クライバーは非常に神経質で、少しの物音でも嫌がるので、控室で歌手たちはずっと声をひそめていたという話。彼は細部にわたって非常にこだわりが強く、歌のブレスについても細かく指示を出してきたそうです。ラ・ボエームでは、ミミ役で一世を風靡したフレーニでさえもクライバーの指示に黙って従っていたとのこと。
話の流れで、たまたま映画の話に触れたら、フェリーニの「そして船は行く」（E la Nave Va）にエリザベスさんご本人が出ているということを知りました。当時彼女はまだ24才でしたが、すでにソプラノ歌手として名声を得ていたので、フェリーニから出演依頼があったようです。その他、例えば建築の話だと、フランク・ゲーリーとかザハ・ハディドなどの建築家たちは彼女に非常に近いところにいる存在らしく、話をし出したら止まりません。
そういうものの一つ一つが彼女の表現力の血となり肉となっていったのでしょう。ヨーロッパには彼女のように伝統的な文化と知性を体現した人がいることを改めて痛感しました。「ルネッサンス的」人物というのが存在するとすると、イタリア人に特に多い気がするのですが、私の偏見でしょうか？エリザベスさんは「教養あるイタリア人には物事を深く考える習慣がある」と言っていました。そう、深く考えないと何も始まらない。
そういえばイタリア出身の若手ピアニストのアレクサンダー・ガジェヴやフィリッポ・ゴリーニらも、ピアノ演奏の腕前が抜群であるのは当然として、物事の見方が深いのが印象的です。ゴリーニはバッハのフーガの技法の14曲それぞれに英文の詩（ソネット、俳句）を書きました。それらはフーガの前に演奏されるプレリュードとして、という意味合いもあるし、バッハの音楽に対して批評や分析でなくアートとしての反応をしたかった、ということもあるそうです。
話がずれてしまいましたが、世界にはスゴイ人がたくさんいます。それにひるむ必要は全くありませんが、実態を知っておくことは大事だと思います。我々に出来ることは地道に努力を重ねていくしかないのですけど。
Last night we had the pleasure of having dinner and talking with Elizabeth Norberg Schultz. She has been a star soprano in the world of opera for many years. Some of you may have heard her play the role of Musetta in “La bohème” when Carlos Kleiber and La Scala performed it in Japan. You can listen to her excellent performance of "L'elisir d'amore" with Pavarotti on Youtube, for example, but today I would like to write about how the conversation with her went about.
Elizabeth's father is the late Christian Norberg Schulz, a world-renowned architect and architectural historian from Norway, and her mother the late Anna Maria de Dominicis is an English literature scholar and translator from Italy. They were in a doctoral program at Harvard at the same time, and they got married.
Elizabeth was born and raised in Oslo, Norway, and later studied music in Rome, Italy. This probably means that she has absorbed the cultures of both the north and south of Europe to the fullest. In addition to her native Norwegian and Italian, she is fluent in English, German, and French.
Her talk was very interesting and multifaceted. For example, she told us about the great conductor Carlos Kleiber. He was so nervous that even the slightest noise would make him uncomfortable, so the singers kept their voices down in the waiting room. He was very particular about every detail, and would even give detailed instructions about the breaths of the singers. In “La bohème”, even Frényi, who dominated the world as Mimi, followed Kleiber's instructions 100%.
In the course of our conversation, I happened to touch upon movies, and learned that Elizabeth herself appeared in Fellini's "And the Ship Will Go" (E la Nave Va). She was only 24 years old at the time, but had already gained fame as a soprano singer, so Fellini had asked her to appear in the film. In addition, architects such as Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid seem to be very close to her, and she never stops talking about them.
Each one of these experiences must have formed the blood and flesh of her expressive power. I realized once again that there are people like her in Europe who embody traditional culture and intellect. If there is such a thing as a "Renaissance" person, it seems that a person would most likely be Italian. Elizabeth said, "Educated Italians have the habit of thinking deeply about things. (Yes, if you don't think deeply, nothing will get done.)
Come to think of it, young Italian pianists such as Alexander Gadjiev and Filippo Golini are also impressive not only because of their outstanding piano playing skills, but also because they tend to have a deep perspective on things. Golini wrote an English poem (sonnet or haiku) for each of the 14 pieces of J.S. Bach's “Art of Fugue”. He says that he wrote them partly as a substitute for the preludes for the fugues, and partly because he wanted to respond to Bach's music with art, not with criticism or analysis. (No other pianist would do such a thing...).
I know this is off topic, but there are so many amazing people in the world. There is no need to be intimidated by them at all, but I think it is important to know what they are really like. All we can do is to make steady efforts, though.
